About Us / Get Involved! |
|
About Us: Our mission is dedicated to providing free English and Spanish/English bilingual dictionaries to all third grade students in public schools across the nation. Our approach is simple. We establish hands-on dictionary distribution projects with interested civic organizations/groups. Each group then selects the schools they want to support and makes a donation to SoCal DP for the books ordered. The civic group generally schedules a ceremonial distribution to each school. Any civic minded group/organization can order dictionaries. Why Get Involved? Educators believe that third grade is the reading level that is key for every student. Dictionaries help students learn the meaning of words, how to become better spellers, better readers, better writers and more creative thinkers! Students who have their own dictionary will use them more often. Improved skills...smarter students...better citizens.

...our origins The SoCal Dictionary Project owes it birth to Mr. Don White of Vista, California. Don was a Rotarian who strongly believed in young people, the Interact Club and bilingualism. Don believed that it is never too late to learn a second language. Don set that example by earning his Bachelor’s Degree from Cal State University at age 65!
Unexpectedly, Don passed away recently but left his legacy and a piece of his heart through the SoCal Dictionary Project.
Don began this worthy project in 2002, with the simple aim: To ensure that third graders could receive free dictionaries to help them with their school studies. He worked diligently and tirelessly as a one man operation to get the word out. He organized the project so that civic and community service groups would act as the ‘arms’ of the project. To date over 200,000 dictionaries have been distributed all over California as well as neighboring states.
As a fellow Rotarian, I became involved with the project through my Rotary organization, and in the desire to continue the mission have picked up the project where Don left off. Our mission remains the same: to provide third graders with a free dictionary. The SoCal Dictionary Project is not limited to California or neighboring states, but to every third grade child in our country.
The SoCal Dictionary Project thanks you and your organization for your continued support and your desire to share in the most important goal –the education of our children.
Please remember, we survive on donations which cover the cost of books and administration. We are non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation and your contributions are tax deductible. —John Goodrich, Board of Directors |
